about

A unique but highly accessible mix of classic soul, chamber pop and lush harmony, 2013's THE OWL AND THE FULL MOON was Adam Marsland's last album as a pop songwriter in the traditional sense. A home to some of his finest songs and singing, Marsland performed nearly all the instruments himself with key exceptions: Get Set Go's Eric Summer provides orchestration on five songs, Probyn Gregory of Brian Wilson's band adds funky horns, and bandmates Evie Sands and Teresa Cowles lend backing vocals to three cuts.

Much of THE OWL AND THE FULL MOON's deceptively dark lyrics deal with fighting depression and toxic relationships, and the album's original production was marred by Marsland's then-frazzled mental state and a rushed release prior to a looming three-month international tour. Though the title track, "Song 11," "Contamination" and "No One's Ever Gonna Hear This Song" are among his very best, the originally released album did not do justice to the depth of the arrangements and performances buried within the record.

In 2021, Marsland returned to the original multitracks and painstakingly remixed the entire album, digging out previously-obscured elements of the recording, brightening and deepening the overall palette. The newly refurbished OWL reveals a record bursting with ideas and subtle touches: Summer's high-flown strings are now front and center with depth and clarity, along with Marsland's rich multitracked vocal harmonies and versatile lead singing.

The 2021 version of OWL also includes six bonus tracks - several outtakes from the original sessions, live versions and a lost single, "Someone Something for Nothing," originated from Adam's time with the Standells that was considered for this album but dropped for lyrical reasons.
