There's a cancer all around me Making lemmings out of fools I can't stop it I can't help it I can't make these ugly feelings go away But I can reach for Something beautiful There's a woman, she is smiling She has no choices She lives in dirt You can't stop it You can't help it You can't close your eyes and wish it all away But you can reach for something beautiful But you can ask for something beautiful But you can be something... The world is what you make it

about

Adam Marsland's long career has taken many unusual turns – from the emo punk turned desert rock of his first band Cockeyed Ghost, to years as a DIY coffee house performer, to extensive session and production work with the likes of various Beach Boys, Standells, Trotsky Icepick, Stew and countless others.

For his 12th album Marsland – best known for vintage production and songwriting in the tradition of '70s pop and soul – took a radically different approach. Decamping to southeast Asia for three months, he recorded local sounds with a portable recording unit (mostly in Bali), and upon his return assembled a delicate, beautiful and thoughtful album that contrasts eastern and western cultures, capturing a difficult moment and offering a possible alternative.

Built around exotic instruments (most noticeably a nylon string instrument called a guitalele), Marsland's experiments range from the exuberant, experimental "Mau Ke Mana", the astounding lush soundscapes of "Something Beautiful", the outrage of "This Is Madness," the Hindu exoticism of "More" (one of many songs featuring intricate vocal work with his longtime bandmates Evie Sands and Teresa Cowles), and in one of the most affecting tracks, Adam tracks down a long-lost singer he hears on the radio in Laos, Chantana Na Hat Yai who performs (for the first time since 1986) her '70s Asian hit "Wind Song."

A unique and special album, Bulé (Indonesian slang for "white foreigner") casts the listener into an exotic world that they will never want to leave. Marsland himself is already headed back to Bali for an "indefinite stay". Bulé is a fitting cap to a distinguished and adventurous music career.
